From the Marine Corps to Manufacturing Leadership: My Conversation with Martin Engster

On a recent episode of the Adapt and Overcome Podcast, I had the opportunity to sit down with Martin Engster, co-owner of Centerline Incorporated. Martin shared an incredible story that spans continents, military service, and more than 60 years of family legacy in the CNC manufacturing industry.

Martin’s company specializes in repairing spindles inside CNC machines—one of the most critical components in modern manufacturing. If a spindle fails, production can come to a halt. Martin and his team help manufacturers get back up and running quickly, serving industries that produce everything from automotive parts to electronics and medical components.

What stood out most in our conversation was the role that family and discipline play in the company’s success.

Martin’s father founded the business and spent nearly six decades mastering the craft of spindle repair. Today, Martin continues that work alongside his brother and his son, working to build a third generation of leadership within the company.

We also talked about Martin’s time serving in the United States Marine Corps, and how the discipline and attention to detail from military life carry directly into the standards they maintain at Centerline. Their work often requires tolerances as tight as five microns—far smaller than the thickness of a human hair—which demands incredible precision and accountability.

Martin also shared his journey of moving to the United States from Germany at the age of nine. After spending more than a decade navigating the citizenship process, he joined the Marine Corps and officially became a U.S. citizen in 2001.

It was a powerful conversation about perseverance, legacy, and what it takes to carry forward a family business.

What does Marine Corps discipline have to do with precision manufacturing?

Quite a bit, as I learned during my recent conversation with Martin Engster, co-owner of Centerline Incorporated, on the Adapt and Overcome Podcast.

Martin shared a fascinating journey that includes:

• Moving from Germany to the United States as a child
• Serving in the U.S. Marine Corps
• Becoming a U.S. citizen in 2001
• Leading a family business built on nearly 60 years of spindle repair expertise

Centerline specializes in repairing CNC machine spindles that keep manufacturing operations running. The level of precision required is incredible—often working within tolerances as small as five microns.

What impressed me most during our conversation was Martin’s commitment to carrying forward the legacy his father built. Today he works alongside his brother and his son to continue growing the family business into its third generation.

If you’re interested in leadership, manufacturing, or the lessons military service can bring into business, I think you’ll enjoy this conversation.
